Abstract/Summary:
Ango Sakaguchi is the representative writer of the literature of the “Decadent School”.With the overflowing multiform ethos,the postwar Japanese society was in a disorder state,in that pessimism and nervous atmosphere,literature of the “Decadent School” rise in response to the proper time and conditions.Literature of the “Decadent School” pursues individual liberation,opposes old moral and order and expresses an intense rebellious spirit in their works.Works of Ango Sakaguchi were deeply influenced by the war,his “Discourse on Decadence” issued in 1946 once gave a huge shock on Japanese society.This work introspected the traditional views and points out that the public should get rid of the great pressure deprives from the wartime system and former moral principles.Japan’s literary circle was in a state of mania in wartime,many writers supported the war enthusiastically,Ango Sakaguchi experienced the war personally,the studying his view of the war will give us a more precise look on that era.Based on his relevant works as an entry point,this article will discuss how he viewed the war as a Japanese,as a writer,as a “involver” of the era,furthermore,this article will pay a close attention on his view of war responsibility.This article selected 11 works of Ango Sakaguchi which generally present his view of war,this article analysises these works by time order.This article considers that his “A Personal View of Japanese Culture” represents his resistence on nationalism,while “Pearls” represents his care on human and contempt on the authority.In the second chapter,this article uses his representative work “Discourse on Decadence” as entry point and analysises his criticize on Mikado system,bushido and former moral principles,elucidates his regret and resent that the public were utilized and forced to participate the war by the Army Headquarters.The third chapter involves “On War” and some other works,Ango Sakaguchi expressed his objection on nuclear weapon and rearmament.The fourth chapter discusses Ango Sakaguchi’s view on article 9 of the constitution and war responsibility.Through the analysis,this article considers that,on the whole,Ango Sakaguchi is a writer with antiwar tendency,he descripted the absurdity of the war and the disaster which the war brought to the Japanese public through his works.As the representative writer of the “decadent school”,Ango Sakaguchi’s view of war has a close relationship with his resistance to the traditional order,his antiwar tendency comes down in one continuous line from war and after war.On the other hand,Ango Sakaguchi viewed the issue stood on the ground as a Japanese,he did not pointed the aggressiveness of the war,his loathing towards the authority was not because they are invaders,while it was because that they are the symbol of the old order.In this sense,although Ango Sakaguchi refused to cooperate with the authority in the wartime and supported the Article 9 of the constitution after war,his antiwar tendency was not genuine and throughly,this is his limitation in his conception.
