Oil portrait painting,as an independent subject matter and painting species,has accumulated its unique artistic enchantment and practical significance in a long historical evolution.Throughout the history of Western painting art,almost all the important painters have created at least a few portraits.From this point of view,portrait painting occupies an indelible position in the history of Western painting,and is an important means of artistic expression.Up to now,works presented by artists both in the West and in China often use this subject matter or form of expression to make artistic treatment and express their own ideas.The enchantment of portrait lies in the fact that it has great artistic value while conveying complete information only by individuals or minorities.Portrait painting evolved from figure painting in ancient Egypt and Greece to form its fixed features and developed into an independent kind of painting for a long time.There are many blurred boundaries among them.And it is not easy to discuss the essence of portrait alone.Therefore,we should make a definition firstly.This paper mainly studies the western oil painting portrait from the 15th century to the 20th century.During these centuries,portrait painting has been sophisticated increasingly.The form of painting is becoming more and more diversified,showing a posture of flowers blooming,which is also an important period for portraits to exert great.The purpose of this paper is to start with the definition and regular pattern of portrait painting,to explore its inherent significance,to analyze its unique form of expression,aesthetics and artistic value,to draw the definition of portrait and to summarize the creative experience for inspiration.
