A Textual Research On The Edition Of "Embroidered Stones And A Dream Of Red Mansions" Published By Woyunshan Museum

Sun Tongsheng’s Biography of the Illustrated Dream of Red Mansions was first published in the seventh year of Guangxu(1881)in Woyunshanguan,Changsha,Hunan Province.It contains a large number of comments by Zhang Xinzhi who is called a Taipingxianren(also called Miaofuxuan),also known as"Miaofuxuan edition".However,in order to distinguish from Zhang Xinzhi’s book"The Stone Legend Comment in Miaofu Pavilion" and to clarify the contribution of Sun Tongsheng,the publisher,this edition is called "Woyunshanguan edition".The publication of Woyunshanguan edition is the first time that Zhang Xinzhi’s comments are presented to the world in the form of block-printed editions,which provides an important carrier for the dissemination of Zhang Xinzhi’s comments,and also becomes an important medium for future generations to understand and print Zhang Xinzhi’s comments.Woyunshanguan edition is engraved in the period of lithographic technology promotion.It is the link between woodcut and lithographic,and it is also of great significance in the edition history of the Dream of Red Mansions.For the discussion of Woyunshanguan edition,this paper does not look at it in isolation,and is limited to the similarities and differences within this version.Instead,it puts it into the whole history of the version of a dream of red mansions,and makes a detailed exploration of the source of the version and its subsequent influence.Furthermore,the status of this version is determined and it is examined comprehensively and systematically.The first chapter investigates the edition characteristics of Woyunshanguan edition,which contains the survival status,version identification and version order of this edition.Firstly,ten Woyunshanguan Library Editions(two aberrant copies included)that the author can find at present are briefly introduced,and a textual research on several editions of them with special book seal was made to determine the specific situation of the edition delivery.At the same time,starting from the publishing errors of each edition,the internal differences among the editions are sorted out.Secondly,the edition identification of Woyunshanguan edition is discovered from the publishing errors,polite formula and variant characters,so as to identify it quickly and accurately.Finally,eight books are classified and analyzed to determine the edition order of Woyunshanguan edition.The second chapter compares Woyunshanguan edition with Chengjia edition,Chengyi edition,Dongguange edition,Tenghuaxie edition and Shuangqingxian edition to find out the origin of Woyunshanguan edition.Firstly,through the comparison with Chengjia edition and Chengyi edition,it is clear that Woyunshanguan edition belongs to Chengjia edition,which has little influence by Chengyi.Secondly,by comparing a number of special variants and other variants,the source and course relationship between Woyunshanguan edition and Tenghuaxie edition can be found.Therefore,it can be concluded that the original version of Woyunshanguan edition should be Tenghuaxie edition rather than Chengjia edition,Quanzhuan edition and Shuangqingxian edition.Finally,the thesis traces the origin of the different characters between Woyunshanguan edition and Tenghuaxie edition,confirms that some of them have attended Dongguange edition and Shuangqingxian edition,and the other part is due to Sun Tongsheng’s subjective revision,which reflects his unique thinking.The third chapter is mainly about the publishing process of Woyunshanguan edition and the influence of lithographic editions thereafter.It confirms Sun Tongsheng’s outstanding contribution and the historical status of Woyunshanguan edition.Firstly,Sun Tongsheng made an important contribution to this edition.Through sorting out the process of publishing Woyunshanguan edition to excavate his outstanding contribution in Woyunshanguan edition,and clarify his merits of collation and publishing.Secondly,Woyunshanguan edition has a great influence on Jinyuyuan edition.By comparing the variants between the Jinyuyuan edition and the Woyunshanguan edition to combs the main text and commentary of the novel comprehensively,and holds that both the main text and the commentary of Zhang Xinzhi come from the Woyunshanguan library edition,especially the Zhang’s comment.As the link between Zhang Xinzhi’s copy and the stone print,the important role of the Woyunshanguan edition can not be ignored.
