James Joyce's fictions are closely related to his life experience, which is not only an important source of his literary creations but also a crucial content of his works. As an exiled artist moving from the value systems' center to the edge and viewing the world with his own unique thinking,Joyce expresses his opposition to the rigid tradition and authoritative value systems in 19 th century's literature of exile.Through characteristic of artists, gender relations, family elements and religious expressions in his works,we're able to explore the relationship between Joyce's writings and real-life experiences. The awful living environment in Joyce's early years, his pretentiousness as well as the sense of mission of creating had made him decide to leave Dublin,go to the European continent and become an exile. In his fictions,Joyce creates a number of autobiographical characters. In articles such as The Sisters and Araby in Dubliners,he reappears his resistance to mainstream public values and religious ideas by instilling the perspective of an adult to a little boy.In The Dead,Joyce expresses his feelings of his country and nation, hoping to promote the Europeanization of Ireland through his artistic creations while exiling in the European continent. In the autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,while defending for his past, his choice of exiling through Stephen's growth,Joyce also shows a radical resistance to Irish public values solidified by religions and narrow ethnological concepts, which embodies Joyce's early exile position. In Ulysses,Joyce makes his artists get rid of the weakness of excessively pursuing the beauty of ideas and staying away from the common people.Through Bloom,an ordinary wandering man who has his own unique way of thinking about the world,he not only approves the human spirit, but also expresses the ideological characteristics of exiles. As for gender relations in his writings,Joyce's own love experience made him frank to sex and attracted to ethical issues in marriage. In Dubliners,Joyce reveals the emotional paralysis and disillusionment of men and women trapped in marriage. In Ulysses,on the one hand,Joyce breaks the taboo, boldly writes about sexual fantasies, masturbations and sexual perversions, unveils the hypocrisy in traditional fictions of love and approves the universality of libido as a human desire. On the other hand,he does not regard the unfairness in traditional marriage ethics as a heinous act,but as a manifestation of human predicament and individual freedom, and tries to find a way out through love and reconciliation, which is also a confirmation of human emotion. The presentation of family emotions in Joyce's works is complicated. On the one hand, conflicts in his family when he was young made Joyce long for leaving his family. On the other hand,he also attaches great importance to the love between him and his parents. In his early works,Joyce reveals the impact of emotional paralysis and family conflicts in the family on his growth as an artist, showing his father's incompetence, his mother's suffering and the damage to the mother-child relationship being held by religion. In Ulysses,as an exile,Joyce expresses his love to his parents and tries to reach reconciliation with his family through his literary efforts. The ideal father-son and mother-child relationship he recreates in his works is a “tender resistance” to the bad family experiences in his early years. When indicating religious ideas,Joyce realized the hypocrisy and corruption of the church and the essence of church that always forges an alliance with politics therefore chose to betray his religion while maintained respect and interest for a few theological aesthetic qualities he had acquired in religion. In his works,Joyce criticizes the Catholic beliefs, exposes the deceitfulness of the church and the ignorance of believers.Meanwhile,Joyce draws on the artistic value of religions. For example,he develops his own exile aesthetics based on Aquinas' theological aesthetics, applies the “Trinity” theory of Catholicism to the creative concept of artists and finally reconstructed religion in his own aesthetics.Achievements Joyce made in the field of fictions can't be separated from his efforts on capturing, examining, and expressing real-life experience, especially his own ones.Joyce's works reproduce his own experiences of growth, love, family issues and religion, show how an exiled artist thinks about the world, declare his alienation and resistance to authority and form a unique ideological and aesthetic system.
