John Fowles is a famous contemporary English novelist.Sense due to the early pressure on social environment and the ideas of existentialism,his characters are facing pressure from the social various aspects,stuck in the "traps" of life,the whole society is like a machine are full of ideas,enveloped in which people lost their freedom,Fowles thus revealed the universal "unfree" living state of human beings rooted in the realistic social and historical context.At the same time,through to the struggling to be free of the shaping of the characters,Fowles discusses the meaning of the concept of "freedom" and the nature from the different Angle and level,show the people the wrong understanding of "freedom",reveals the relativity of "freedom",the importance of responsibility and other contents,presents the spiritual symbol of freedom and the transcendental meaning of freedom,showed his concept of "survival" and "freedom",as well as to the "existential freedom" of propositions related to think and respond.In addition to exploring the freedom of human existence in terms of the theme of the novel,Fowles also attempted to pursue artistic freedom through the form of the novel.In his works,he seeks the road to freedom in the construction of the novel through polyphonic narrative technique,intertextual narrative strategy,open narrative structure and other art forms,and tries to give freedom to the characters,narrators and readers,so as to highlight and deepen his proposition of "freedom".By giving consideration to both the content and the form of the novel,Fowles shows his concern and thinking about human existence,and conveys his sense of social responsibility and humanistic concern for the reality.
