There are different types of text signals in the current teaching auxiliary materials,which affect the retention and understanding of information in the process of reading by college students.The purpose of this study was to explore the design of the text signals in order to find ways to improve collage students' reading effects.A between-subjects design of 4(the type of signals:micro-signals,macro-signals,both micro-signals and macro-signals,no signal)× 2(reading time-limit:long,short)was used in this study.College students from eight classes were selected as subjects and the text fragment "connotation and requirements of quality education" in the textbook for the National Teacher Qualification Examination(Zhonggong Edition)was selected as the experimental material.Therefore researcher could investigate the influence of text signals and reading time-limits on the reading effects for college students.The results showed that:(1)The main effect of text signals was significant.The retention of tagged information and the total retentive score of information of the text with micro-signals were higher than that of the ones with macro-signals or without signals significantly.And the score of transfer of the text with micro-signals was higher than that of the ones without signals significantly.However,the score of transfer of the text with macro-signals was higher than that of the ones with micro-signals or without signals significantly,but the level of cognitive load was lower significantly.(2)The main effect of reading time-limits was significant.When the reading time-limit was short,different kinds of reading achievements were lower than that of longer reading time-limit.Moreover,the level of cognitive load of the text with short reading time-limit was higher than that of the ones with long reading time-limits.(3)The interaction between text signals and reading time-limits was significant.Under the condition of short reading time-limit,the retention of tagged information and the total retentive score of information of the text with micro-signals were higher than that of ones with macro-signals or without signals significantly,but the retention of untagged information was lower.The score of transfer of the text with macro-signals was higher than that of the ones with micro-signals or without signals significantly,but the level of cognitive load was lower.However,under the condition of long reading time-limit,the retention of tagged information and the total retentive score of information of the text with micro-signals were still higher than that of the ones with macro-signals or without signals significantly.And the score of transfer of the text with macro-signals was still higher than that of the ones with micro-signals or without signals significantly.But the differences were lower than the condition of short reading time-limit.Whatever,the reading effects of the text with both macro-signals and micro-signals were better.And in this case,the level of cognitive load among different kinds of text signals were low and seemed no significant difference.The following conclusions are drawn:(1)Micro-signals can improve the retention of tagged information,the total retentive score of information and the score of transfer,but can't reduce the level of cognitive load.Macro-signals can improve the score of transfer and reduce the level of cognitive load.(2)Whether the reading time-limit is long or short,micro-signals can improve the retention of tagged information and macro-signals can improve the score of transfer.But when the reading time-limit is short,these effects are more significant.Under the condition of short reading time-limit,micro-signals can reduce the retention of untagged information,but there is no reduce in the condition of long reading time-limit.Under the condition of short reading time-limit,macro-signals can reduce the level of cognitive load.But when the reading time-limit is long,no matter what kind of signals in the text the level of cognitive load is low.(3)When the text with both micro-signals and macro-signals is read under the condition of long reading time-limit,the effects are best.
