"Phronesis" is an important concept in Aristotle’s ethical system. The phronesis systematic exposition is mainly embodied in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. In the sixth volume of Nicomachean Ethics, besides phronesis analysis,Aristotle also compares phronesis with sophia in order to better analyze phronesis.Although phronesis and sophia are both virtues of thought, there are differences and connections between them.At the same time, they also have some influence on Aristotle’s division of happiness. However, the relationship between phronesis and sophia and their influence on happiness have been neglected in later studies. The author believes that Aristotle’s phronesis and sophia must be clarified in order to better understand Aristotle’s ethics. This paper mainly combs and clarifies Aristotle’s phronesis and sophia by means of literature analysis and text argumentation. On this basis, the author analyses the relationship between them, and interprets how phronesis and sophia affect the division of happiness.Firstly,in the first chapter, this paper will discuss virtue.Aristotle believes that the division of virtue is consistent with the division of soul.Virtue is divided into two parts: virtue of character and virtues of thought. In Aristotle’s view, phronesis and sophia are both virtues of thought, while virtue of character are closely related to phronesis. Therefore, before discussing phronesis and sophia, the author should clarify the relevant content of virtue. In the second chapter, the author focuses on phronesis and sophia.By clarifying the connotation of phronesis and sophia, people can better judge the relationship between phronesis and sophia. In the third chapter, the author mainly studies phronesis, sophia and happiness. There is a certain relationship between phronesis and sophia, which is reflected in their differences and connections. The difference between them is mainly reflected in three aspects: object, acquisition mode and rank, and the connection between them is also reflected in the difference: phronesis serves sophia.Phronesis and sophia also influenced Aristotle’s division of happiness.Aristotle regards the meditation activities dominated by sophia as the happiness of the first class, and the happiness dominated by phronesis and virtue of character as the happiness of the second class. These two kinds of happiness correspond to phronesis and sophia respectively.
