Louis Durey was a member of Les six.Durey’s art song cycles Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d’Orphée composed in 1919 was an important representative work of his early creation. As a case study, this paper explores Durey’s thinking on harmony creation by analyzing the tonality, harmonic materials and processing methods of Le Bestiaire. The article is divided into three parts. The first part analyzes the creation background and the introduction of Durey and his works. The second part talks about the tonality of the work from the aspects of tonality materials and its alternation, single tonality and multi-tonality.The third part explores the harmonic processing from the perspective of chord structure, modal harmony progression, parallel progression, and transfer and change of tone. The study found that there are two principles permeate the overall design of the cycles: "mode" and "simplicity." First of all, this work is tonal music, and in terms of harmony,it is not functional progression but non-functional tonalization. The structure of chords is mostly based on third degree superposition, but more emphasis on mode color in arrangement.Secondly, the principle of "simplicity" is reflected in the short length and simple structure of the works, most of which are multi-phrase structures. The melody is concise and unadorned; The use of chords and the relative freedom of harmonic progression.
