Lieder applied literary poetry as its lyrics, and musically integrated vocal melodies and instrumental accompaniments.Although Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756-1791),the greatest composer from Austria, did not produce a great amount of Lieder(33 songs only),he played an important role in the history of the Lieder development.Among his limited Lieder productions,Das Veilchen(1785)is one of his masterpieces. Its lyrics are selected from a poem by Johann.Wolfgang von Goethe(1749-1832).Besides Mozart, several composers also set the words of Das Veilchen into a Lieder. However, the one composed by Mozart managed to have a wider spread.Mozart's Das Veilchen features a well-knit musical structure and charmingly poetic lyrics. In this essay,Das Veilchen(1844)by Clara Schumann(1819-1896,a famous female composer of the nineteenth century),is chosen to be compared with Mozart's version.Comparing multiple aspects including analysis of forms, harmonic progressions, phrasings, piano accompaniments, performing styles and the musical connections with the scene of the poetry,This essay will explore the diversities of two composers' musical styles, interpretations, composing approaches as well as the integration of the melodies and piano parts.Ultimately,it will provide in details its new perspectives on the understandings and prospects of two Lieders by Mozart and Clara Schumann.
