Hermit image is an important content of classical Chinese painting creation and the hermit motif was established in the pre-Qin philosophy and literature. After the rise of the atmosphere of seclusion in the Six Dynasties, the depictions of hermits and the expression of hermit thought by the literati painters promoted the hermit motif transition and implementation to the field of painting. The hermit began to become a pivotal theme in painting. After the Tang and Five Dynasties, hermit images gradually became richer and more mature in both the connotation and the expression form. The painters carefully selected the life materials of the hermit and further processed and refined it to express different hermit themes with specific symbols. At the same time, painters of all generations have adopted many representative modeling forms, thus highlighting the hermit's character style and spiritual connotation. The depiction and expression of hermit images in Chinese paintings have also been confirmed in the poems and postscripts of many hermit paintings. Finally, the article also reveals the unique aesthetic connotation of hermit painting from the metaphysical level.
