A Comparative Study Of The Use Of Meta-discourse Markers Between China's “Government Work Report” And The US “State Of The Union Address”

Under the background of globalization,exchanges between countries are increasing.As an important annual speech of the national government,the languages of the China's Government Work Report and the America's State of the Union Address are authoritative,rigorous,formal,normative and refined.They have important research value in linguistic and cultural studies.Metadiscourse markers are also used in reports of government work.It plays an indispensable role in passing on and winning trust.Thus,this thesis aims to discuss metadiscourses in China's Government Work Report and the America's State of the Union.This study illustrates the theoretical and empirical studies of metadiscourse and explains the relationship between basic discourse,parentheses,metalanguage,complex sentence relational markers and metadiscourse.Based on Hyland's"interpersonal-interactive" classification model,this paper investigates the metadiscourse markers in China's Government Work Report and America's State of the Union Address from 2009 to 2018,and summarizes the distribution of metadiscourse markers in China's Government Work Report and America's State of the Union Address.This paper also analyses the similarities and differences of the distribution and linguistic characteristics of metadiscourse markers in these two texts,explains the reasons for these differences from three aspects:language type,language structure and thinking mode,and further analyses the similarities and differences of the pragmatic functions of the high frequency metadiscourse markers in these two texts.Through the comparative analysis of the distribution of metadiscourse markers in the China's Government Work Report and the America's State of the Union Address,it is found that the distribution of metadiscourse markers in these two corpus share both similarities and differences.
