This paper mainly analyzes the cross-cultural intertextual relationship between Jia Pingwa's Gao Laozhuang and James Joyce's Ulysses from a perspective of close reading through the parallel research method in comparative literature. The reason I chose the research topic of the relationship between Gao Laozhuang and Ulysses is that Jia Pingwa said he apppreciated Joyce's Ulysses in the postscript of Gao Laozhuang, and admitted that Gao Laozhuang was a turning point of his literary creation in the interview.Otherwise, the main line of “home wandering away from home” in Gao Laozhuang is similar to that of “home wandering away from home” in Ulysses, while the various connections between Ulysses and Odyssey have been debated by researchers. On the contrary, the name of Gao Laozhuang is from the literary classic Journey to the West, but the relationship between them has never been studied. Therefore, this paper aims to make some efforts in this area, through a close reading of the text of Gao Lao Zhuang,to find out the intertextuality with Ulysses, and analyze how it creates its own derivative works from the intertextual relationship between Ulysses and Homer's epic Odyssey, and compare Gao Lao Zhuang and Journey to the West from the intertextuality within Chinese culture, and seek the intercultural intertextuality between Gao Laozhuang and Ulysses.According to this idea, this paper has formed three interrelated research themes: ghost, reincarnation and root seeking.Based on intertextuality and other related theories, this paper presents the soul of the text or the soul of the text in a new form after reweaving, and then traces its origin in the new text. The first chapter mainly analyzes the ghost image in Ulysses and Gao Laozhuang. In the two texts, ghost is not only closely connected with the concepts of death, rebirth and reincarnation, but also an important supplement to the narrative dimension of the protagonist. At the same time,Joyce and Jia Pingwa also think about the degradation of people's living conditions in their respective cultures by means of ghosts symbolizing death. The second chapter continues the previous discussion on how the ghost of the pretext reincarnates and derives new works with the same tension. As we all know,Ulysses is the reincarnation of Odyssey. The author turns the hero Odysseus, into Bloom by irony. The former's adventure on his way home is also degraded into mediocre wandering.Jia Pingwa continues to write the story of Zhu Bajie in Journey to the West by using the derivative method of this text, and creates the image of Gao Zilu, who is also greedy for small things and lusts. As a result of the inter cultural intertextuality,Gao Zilu is not only the reincarnation of Zhu Bajie, but also the soul of Bloom.Since both Ulysses and Gao Laozhuang are reincarnations of ghosts in the pre text,it is necessary to find the ghosts or the roots of the text in the third chapter. However,in the vast and complex intertextual network,we can never find the root of the text.Similarly, the root seeking of their own history and culture in the two texts seems to have failed. If Bloom's wandering is a symbolic expression of rootlessness in Irish culture,Xixia(the wife of gaozilu)also has complex cultural connotations for the rooting and failure of gaolaozhuang's history. But the failure of root seeking does not mean that root seeking itself is meaningless, because the root seeking of culture is often an important opportunity for cultural self innovation.
