| Mind wandering(MW)is a common conscious experience of human beings. When mind wanders, the content of consciousness turns from the internal thought flow in the long-term memory storage system, which is in a state of decoupling from the current external perception information.Throughout previous research, most researchers thought that this state of decoupling is "all-ornothing",that is,people are either focused on the current task or in a state of mind wandering. With the continuous deepening of the study of mind wandering, more and more researchers have begun to adopt a continuous perspective to view this state of mind wandering, that is to say that mind wandering is carried out in a degree, and the process of it is a weak to deep development process. This hypothesis has also been confirmed in many studies. However, most of the previous studies used subjective indicators to explore the degree of mind wandering.Considering that on the one hand, subjective reports may interrupt the natural process of the task,on the other hand, subjective reports on the state of attention will also be affected by their own level of meta-consciousness and the subjective assessment of task performance,so it is necessary to use more objective and reliable indicators to provide more sufficient evidence for the hypothesis that there is a degree of mind wandering. In addition, most studies have stayed on the verification of whether there is a degree of mind wandering and the occurrence characteristics of different degrees of mind wandering. It is still unknown about the neurophysiological mechanism of various degrees of mind wandering, which needs further investigation. Therefore, this research focuses on the phenomenon of mind wandering, and uses experimental research methods to make a deeper investigation on whether mind wandering has different degrees and the electrophysiological characteristics of mind wandering of different degrees.Study 1 used the Sustained Attention to Response Task(SART)to compare the no-go error rate, response time(RT),RT variability, and omissions rate under different experimental conditions by manipulating the color salience of the target stimulus, using objective indicators to verify the hypothesis that there is a degree of mind wandering, and laying the foundation for subsequent research. On the basis of Study 1,Study 2 used the current concern instruction for the first time to induce subjects to mind wandering, and examined whether this method could effectively increase the frequency of mind wandering without prolonging the duration of the experiment and improve the ecological validity of mind wandering experimental research. At the same time, the event-related potential(ERP)technology with high time resolution was used to record the subject’s electrophysiological activities in the process of completing the SART task. The analysis of differences in cortical analysis of external task stimuli when mind wandering at different degrees enrich our understanding of electrophysiological activities related to the degree of mind wandering, and further validate and extend the theory of resource control.Combining behavioral data with ERP data, this study draws the following conclusions:(1)The state of mind wandering has different degrees. The process of mind wandering is a development process from weak to deep, which is carried out in a hierarchical manner.(2)In the process of dissociation from the external environment, different degrees of mind wandering have occupied different proportions of attention resources.Specifically, compared to weak mind wandering, deep mind wandering consumes more attention resources that were originally used for the current task, leading to a reduction in the cortical analysis of external tasks, and therefore greater damage to task performance.(3)The current concern instruction can effectively induce the state of mind wandering, thereby increasing the frequency of mind wandering without increasing the duration of the experiment, and improving the ecological validity of the mind wandering experimental research.(4)Highly salient visual stimuli can not only capture people’s attention in the state of focus and improve the task performance, but also promote the coupling of perception and attention in the state of mind wandering, reducing the possibility of making mistakes. In summary, this study combines computer behavior experiments with ERP technology, and uses objective indicators to verify the hypothesis that there is a degree of mind wandering, which enriches existing theoretical results and promotes people to study it in a more detailed and structured way.In addition, using electrophysiological indicators to explore the characteristics of mind wandering in different degrees, further expanding the scope of application of resource control theory, and promoting people’s comprehensive understanding of brain working methods. |
