Eye movement in reading is closely related to cognitive processing.Only by coordinating the relationship between the two,can language information processing be carried out smoothly.Eye movement tracking technology has been proved an effective tool to reveal the moment-bymoment cognitive processing in reading.Researchers have obtained lots of achievements in skilled readers, however, ignoring the effects seen within children and how these effects might change. It is found that children's readers rely more on top-down contextual information, but the ability to extract and use low-level visual information from the parafoveal is still in development. The present study used eye tracking technology to investigate the interaction between context predictability and parafoveal processing for developing readers during sentence reading and the adjustment of reading skills to them.Context predictability is one of the most important factors that affect the processing of word identification, which is manifested in the higher skip rate, the fewer probability of regression and shorter fixation duration in high context compared with low context.During reading, information is processed not only from the currently fixated word and also the words to the right of fixation in the parafoveal, which could facilitate the recognition of the upcoming words. The previous studies supported that there is interaction effect between the two factors for adult readers. But less is known about these effects for developing children readers. The current study used the Boundary Paradigm to record eye movements of 76 primary school students during sentences reading while a set of tests were used to measure children's reading ability. The experiment is divided into two parts. The first part: The experiment design was a 2(Context: Predictable,Neutral)× 3(Parafoveal Preview: Identity,Visually Similar,Visually Dissimilar)within-subject.The second part: on the basis of the first part, the continuous variable reading skills are added to investigate how different reading skills can adjust the contextual predictability and the effect of parafoveal preview. The results indicated that:(1)Chinese developing readers used context predictability information to facilitate word recognition showed higher skipping rate, shorter fixation time and less regression probability for higher predictability words.(2)Children could acquire the parafoveal information to promote word processing, compared with visually dissimilar preview words, identity preview had higher skip rate, shorter fixation time.(3)The interaction between the two were found for children readers, which together promoted word recognition, moreover, there were significant preview effects and visual preview effects for words in higher contextual predictability but later preview effects and no visual preview for words in neutral context.(4)Reading skills can regulate the interaction between context predictability and parafoveal preview, indicated that children with low reading skills got more benefit form parafoveal preview for words in higher contextual predictability.(5)In the early stage of vocabulary processing, children readers begin to use two kinds of information interaction to promote vocabulary recognition, and the reader's reading skills regulate the interaction between them.
