"Morning Supplement" In The Process Of Modern Folklore

The origin of modern Chinese folklore is inseparable from the May 4th New Culture Movement,in which the value of the Chinese folklore has been revalued.The Supplement of Morning,as one of the Four Major Supplements has made great contributions to the pioneering of modern Chinese folklore.This dissertation intends to make a comprehensive analysis of the contributions of The Supplement of Morning,in the field of Chinese folklore from six aspects.The introduction mainly talks about the research content and significance,then summarizes the research status of The Supplement of Morning in various fields.The first chapter focuses on the background of the emergment of Chinese folklore and the role of modern press in promoting folklore culture.This chapter also discusses the contribution made by the The Supplement of Morning at various stages in the process of folklore.The Chinese folklore didn’t emerge at once.The May 4th Movement and the modern press,especially supplements,have made preparations for the emerging of modern folklore.Initially,the Chinese folklore only involved the collection,sorting and research of folksongs,then gradually researched to the fields of folk literature such as myths,legends,fairy tales and fables.And it developed into the study of etiquette and superstition,festivals and other folk events later.The Supplement of Morning played a certain role in promoting these early stages of folklore.The second chapter talks about the contribution The Supplement of Morning in the Sun Li Dazhao period has made to promoted the widespread dissemination of the Folksong Movement.The birth of folklore was marked by the folksong movement.At that time,scholars’ understanding and research on folklore also began with folksongs.This chapter also introduces the early folklore study of Gu Jiegang who was one of the pioneers of folklore,and also the main contributor to the folklore of The Supplement of Morning during Li Dazhao’s period.The third chapter talks about the role of The Supplement of Morning in the Sun Fuyuan period in building the discipline of folk literature,and introducs one of the pioneers of folklore,Zhou Zuoren’s concept of folk literature.The Supplement of Morning in Sun Fuyuan’s period was unprecedentedly grand.The scholars at that time gradually realized the limitations brought by simply studying folk songs,and proposed the expansion from "folk songs" to "folk literature".During the period of Sun Fuyuan,the folk articles published in the The Supplement of Morning also expanded from simple songs to all aspects of folk literature such as fairy tales,myths,and folk tales.A large number of articles and translations related to folk literature have been published,giving great support to the development of folk literature.This chapter also introduces Zhou Zuorena,another pioneer of folklore and the main writer of the folklore of the The Supplement of Morning in Sun Fuyuan’s period.The fourth chapter talks about the scope and research methods of modern folklore have been further expanded during the period of Xu Zhimo.During this period,the scope of folklore research had been further expanded,scholars had a clearer understanding of modern folklore,the concept of folklore had gradually taken shape,and the concept of "folklore" has also been improved.Not only did the subject range extended from folk literature to all aspects of folklore,but the research methods also ranged from purely collecting and organizing research to improving field researches.Although due to changes of the environment and the editor-in-chief’s thoughts,The Supplement of Morning did not leave much room for folklore during this period,but in addition to folk literature,articles in other fields of folklore such as folk games and folk beliefs are published in The Supplement of Morning was still widely published.This chapter also introduces Jiang Shaoyuan,who was one of the main founders of folklore,and also a major contributor to the folklore of the Morning News Supplement in Xu Zhimo’s time.The sixth chapter was the conclusion which summaries the research value of The Supplement of Morning in the process of modern folklore.The writer hopes that this thesis will shed light on the present strategy of building a cultural power.
