Margaret Atwood,as a writer with a strong sense of political and social participation, has read lots of utopian and dystopian fiction and science fiction since her childhood.Relying on the specific historical context, utopian fiction create a better life and existence through imagination.Dystopian fiction warns of the problems of the present society by promoting a bad world. Both utopian fiction and dystopian fiction have achieved the view and criticism of reality in a different way from traditional realism, and they are closely connected with social events and social movements and influence each other.Through continuing this tradition,Margaret Atwood constructed a unique ustopia in her speculative fiction,a world in which utopia and dystopia coexist. From the perspective of the main idea,on the one hand,Atwood constructs a totalitarian regime and a technology-dominated world in her ustopia, criticizing the oppression of individuals by totalitarian politics and the abuse of technology which threat to human beings, continuing the early warning of dystopian fiction to modern society.Atwood also criticizes and satirizes the oppression of women by patriarchy from a distinct gender perspective. On the other hand,Atwood depicts different forms of utopia in her ustopia from individual, group to national, which get rid of the slightly pessimistic and gloomy atmosphere in dystopian fiction and retains the expectation of a better way of living in utopian fiction.Atwood always participates in the present reality, and responds to social movements and events of recent years in her ustopia which expands the vision of utopian literature and dystopian literature. From the perspective of narration, first of all,Atwood adopts open space-time setting to create defamiliarization, with the details of virtual intersection to achieve novel effect, capturing the reality with rich imagination, and expresses the hope for the future.Secondly, she satirizes the problems in reality by virtue of witty verbal irony, situational irony and structural irony, and continues the satirical tradition of utopia and dystopian fiction. Finally,Atwood makes full use of and reconstructs various texts such as the bible, myth and science fiction to achieve the purpose of narration.
