Thomas H.Ogden(1946-) is an American psychoanalyst and writer, devoted to academic research and novel creation in the field of psychoanalysis, which covers a wide range of content, novel ideas, and high readability.Ogden not only supplements fresh blood in psychoanalysis theory, but also makes outstanding contributions in clinical practice. In theory,he combed, summarized and integrated the ideas of many psychoanalytical representatives(mainly focused on the British Object Relations School)to highlight their more theoretical value, and on the basis of this,he dialogued with his predecessors and proposed his own theoretical perspectives, for example,he reinterpreted and interpreted the concepts of instinct, fantasy, projective identification, transference, countertransference and enriched the theory of object relations. On the basis of the paranoid-schizoid position and depressive position proposed by Klein,he expanded the connotation of the two positions and proposed an autism-contiguous position, which he thought appeared earlier than the two positions, but existed with them.In practice,he also made important contributions based on his clinical background and rich practical experience. For example, for the first time,he proposed the analytic third, which combines psychoanalysis with intersubjective thinking, and it was applied to the analysis context to make a new explanation of the treatment process, and gives the clinical practice of projective identification a more detailed interpretation. For another example,he has a new interpretation of dreams, believing that dreams are a kind of internal communication,in which one part of the self generates the dream, while the other part of the self understands it and then generates the dream experience. For those who cannot dream, the analyst needs to participate in the dream-like conversation with the client, and this unique way of analyzing with the client is "talking-as-dreaming".In addition,he also proposed and valued creative reading and analytical writing, which is of great benefit in understanding psychoanalytic texts, not only immersing the reader in the experience, but also bringing the reader closer to the analytical experience.Although Ogden left a lot of precious "wealth" in the field of psychoanalysis, his works did not form a complete theoretical system due to their extensive and trivial contents, and his integration of object relation theory was limited to the expansion of concepts.
