The case of poverty in Africa has been a bone of contention over the decades. In fact,Africa is the most concentrated continent with developing countries. While some nongovernmental organization perceive this to be a problem to be solved by donations and giving of aids, many Africans from within Africa believe that Africans need to take responsibility for our progress. But the reality may not be as exact. There is no island of success anywhere and Africa is no difference. Therefore,to do well as a nation, countries must form relationships that transcend their borders.International organizations seeking to enter a Nigeria market must be certain of the business environment. One of the ways to understand the terrain is to investigate the relationship of Trade Openness and Poverty as measured by GDP per capita). The ex post facto research design was used for this study. The ex post facto research design also referred to as after-the-fact research design,is a quasi-experimental which investigates the facts after they have occurred. This study made use of annual time series data from Nigeria, with data covering the period from 1980-2017 accounting for Thirty-Eight(38)years.The data were sourced from the World Bank,International Monetary Fund,National Bureau of Statistics(Nigeria),and Central Bank of Nigeria. This study also revealed the effect of trade openness may depend on a variety of country characteristics, including some that are subject to reform. To solve the measurement problems,we used relative measures of poverty because of the unavailability of a more preferable measures of poverty,HDI or poverty headcount.Data was obtained on GDP Per Capita(GPC),Trade Openness,Inflation,Foreign Direct Investment(FDI),and Life expectancy at birth.Data analysis was done using IBM SPSS.This study went a step further to investigate the role played by FDI,Life expectancy, and Inflation. This then leads to a number of policy formulation initiatives to be taken by the government.
