IISince entering the modern society, people have been pursuing the right andfreedom of choice, trying to have more options, hoping to better control their destiny and have a happier and more successful life. With the development of social economy, product manufacturers and the service industry are constantly catering to their needs.Twenty-four flavors of jam, endless dish choices in restaurants...Having the right to choose and making decisions from a large number of options seems to bring people a free and better life. The possibility of reversing the original decision also provides a sense of choice freedom.Reversible decision making not only gives people more time to make the final decision, but also may switch back and forth between preferences, providing an opportunity to change in case the original decision is wrong or a better option was left out. However, previous studies have shown that the reality is quite different from people's expectations.Instead of a more satisfactory result, the reversible decision may lead to a decrease in satisfaction.Previous studies have not given a reasonable explanation for this, and this study will further explore this issue. In this study,a total of 334 subjects were selected through the combination of simulated scenario and questionnaire measurement.A questionnaire survey and two formal experiments were conducted.Firstly, the cross-cultural consistency of the influence of reversible decision on satisfaction was verified.Secondly, the psychological mechanism of reversible decision influencing satisfaction was investigated by combining counterfactual thinking and expected regret. Finally, combining individual trait cognitive closure needs to explore the differences. The results showed that:(1)people prefer to retain the opportunity of reversibility, and individuals with high NFCC are more willing to retain the opportunity of reversibility than those with low NFCC;(2)there is a significant interaction between the selection scenario(reversible/irreversible)and the scoring time on individual satisfaction.Irreversible decision will lead to a significant increasein individual satisfaction, while reversible decision will lead to a decrease in satisfaction;(3)counterfactual thinking mediates the effect of reversible decision on satisfaction;(4)counterfactual thinking and expected regret mediates the effect of reversible decision on satisfaction.(5)cognitive closure needs(NFCC)to regulate the influence of reversible decision on satisfaction. The satisfaction of individuals with low NFCC is less affected by reversible decision, while that of individuals with high NFCC decreases significantly after experiencing reversible decision. Conclusion: people prefer to retain reversible decisions, and reversible decisions induce more counterfactual thinking, which will further lead to the negative emotion of expected regret, thus reducing the satisfaction of individuals with the initial option.Individual trait cognitive closure needs to play a moderating role in the effect of reversible decision making on satisfaction.
