Regional diversification is a vision of regional growth possibilities based on existing local capacities, the objective of which is to take advantage of existing advantages, identify hidden opportunities and create new platforms to enable regions to build competitive advantages in high value-added activities.Previous studies have shown that technology relatedness is essential to the development of regional diversification. However, only the development of new technologies related to the technical basis of the region is likely to make the region fall into the dilemma of path locking, and acquiring complex knowledge is a strategy that can greatly enhance the competitive advantage of the region. In this way,the diversification of regional development should be based on the existing technology,as far as possible the introduction of knowledge with high complexity, knowledge complexity and technology relevance into the framework of regional diversification development, can effectively provide a reference for regional development. In addition, unlike Western developed countries, although studies such as technological relatedness have shown that regional diversification is based on existing technological foundations and follows a path-dependent approach. The background of China's "strong government" determines that regional development will be affected by government subsidies and other policy factors, and even lead to the trend of path breakthrough. Therefore, the study of the influence of government subsidies on regional technological evolution is helpful to clarify the role of government forces, not only for the future regional development policy-making,but also for the evolution of economic geography related to the study of China.Based on the above analysis, this article describes the spatial distribution and evolution characteristics of technology association density and knowledge complexity in China by using Arc GIS.Based on the patent data of State Intellectual Property Office, the LPM econometric model is used. The effects of technology relatedness and knowledge complexity on regional technology introduction and technology growth are described quantitatively.Combined with the subsidy data in the database of Chinese industrial enterprises, the influence of government subsidies on regional technology evolution is described quantitatively by using OLS model. Finally, based on the spatial description and quantitative analysis mentioned above, the policy framework of regional diversification development is formulated, which provides a reference for the technological progress and upgrading of Chinese cities. The research shows that:(1)As far as technology correlation is concerned, the evolution and development of urban technology in China generally show the characteristics of path dependence, and the technological relatedness plays a significant positive role in the entry and growth of new technologies. However, there are significant regional differences in this path-dependent development model.(2)As far as the complexity of regional knowledge is concerned, firstly,in the last decade, the cities with higher KCI scores in China have shown a "southward" trend. That is from the northeast and north China to the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta regions. In addition,if the knowledge with higher complexity has a higher relatedness with the original technology base in the region,it will have a significant positive impact on the introduction and growth of complex technology. On the contrary,if the correlation is lower, blind introduction of complex technology will not have a significant impact on regional technology entry and growth.(3)As far as the government subsidy is concerned, overall, government subsidies play a regulatory role in technology relatedness. On the one hand, the government subsidy is beneficial to the improvement of the existing regional productive capacity and the trend of regional path dependence; On the other hand,it can bring a new path to the region, especially the western region with strong policy, realize the breakthrough of the path and create new development opportunities for the region.(4)As far as policy enlightenment is concerned, combined with the analysis of four typical cases,it is concluded that for the regions with different technological bases, the technical association and technical complexity should be considered comprehensively, and the technology with high complexity should be introduced as far as possible to enhance the regional competitive advantage. In addition, for regions with weak technological base and low complexity of knowledge,we should give full play to the strength of government subsidies to help the region develop from scratch.
