Abstract/Summary:
I considered the influence of water quality on benthic macroinvertebrates by comparing taxon richness and abiotic variables at Madrona Marsh, a restored wetland in Torrance, CA and the Gardena Willows, a remnant site in Gardena, CA. Both sites are surrounded by urban development. Small wetlands such as these are vital because they can harbor large numbers of species and are important ecologically. In May 2008 I found high taxon richness at each site. In January 2009 the taxon richness was lower and similar richness was found within and between the sites. There was no significant relationship between benthic macroinvertebrates and abiotic variables, since taxon richness was so low and both sites were dominated by one family, Oligochaetes. This study indicates the possible importance of community successional change through the year. Further studies will try to elucidate the actual dynamics of these systems.
