Abstract/Summary:
Butt welding of wire rods has great importance for continuous wire drawing process and wire fabric (wire mesh), etc. Resistance welding is an important tool for welding of wire rods without filler metal, and has very less complexity in the welding process.;This research includes a detailed literature survey, plan of experiments, selection of wire rods, testing of weld samples, and extensive microstructure analysis, along with documentation and interpretation of the results. This research studied probable reasons for changes in the properties of weld samples and drew some conclusions in order to minimize unwanted change in properties such as presence of martensite, porosity in weld sample etc. ASTM standards were strictly followed in preparing the sample and analyzing of microstructure of weld. It was concluded that resistivity can be an effective tool to set weld parameter in resistance butt welding of wire rods.;This research assesses how the knowledge of resistivity of particular wire rod helps in selecting the welding parameters and optimizes power to obtain good weld. This thesis qualitatively assess the tensile strength, cracks and porosities, inclusions, flash characteristics, length of HAZ, and Martensite content of welds, which results in the weld parameter selection based of resistivity of wire rod.
