Abstract/Summary:
Dr. Jameel Ahmad developed a patented technology for blast protection of a concrete wall structure. The design included a steel wire flexible mesh system where two layers of 1-inch steel mesh sandwich one layer of the same 1-inch steel mesh that is crimped and welded to the two layers. The middle, crimped layer is designed to add additional reinforcement, to the concept of the mesh system, and the entire mesh system adds additional reinforcement to the existing reinforcement bars present in a concrete wall. The mesh is imbedded within the concrete block, close to the surface of the concrete wall, to act as an adhesive, to the particles that are shattered by the impact of the blast. The concept is for the mesh system to encase the concrete like a "sack of potatoes," where motion is allowed within the encasing layer, yet holding the motion within its layer.
