Abstract/Summary:
Photographer Joel-Peter Witkin's audience is often frightened by his powerful images that depict death, abuse, maimed human bodies, and sexuality. His work is thought of as sacrilegious because it satirizes and warps the imagery that traditional Christian iconography usually involves. Ironically, Witkin's mission in his photography has always been to bring dark subjects to the light, a concept that he draws on heavily from his personal Christian beliefs.
