Abstract/Summary:
The implementation of the early nineteenth-century reforms in India marked a shift in British ideologies towards India. This work analyzes the late Victorian and post-Independence scholarships, to discern historiographic trends that recognize and analyze the change in British attitudes towards India in the early nineteenth century. In addition to realizing the existence of historical trends, this work uncovers the continuity of ideas and philosophies in historical writings, due to the dependence on prior works in historical scholarship. Late Victorian scholarship influenced by the imperialist policies, 1857 Mutiny and early utilitarian writings, continue the early nineteenth-century traditions of arguing for sustained British dominion over India. Post-independence scholarship, on the other hand, influenced by nationalistic and imperialist writings recognize the utilitarian and evangelical movements as the driving force for the early nineteenth-century reforms in India.
