Abstract/Summary:
Saul Bellow's Nobel Prize winning novel Humboldt's Gift counters the traditional Hemingway hero, satirizes the quest for the American dream, and explores the importance of the quest over that which is sought. This thesis addresses these observations through literary analysis and philosophical discussion and argument. This work supports the belief that Bellow made a conscious effort to represent a new interpretation of the modern American literary hero and how society and life effect his quest for happiness.
