Abstract/Summary:
This study investigates performance issues in Toru Takemitsu's solo piano works. It attempts to show that how pianists should interpret and perform his music while exploring his musical concept. The approach considers how to capture the characteristics of his piano music, to know how his music changed with the time, to understand his special notation in the score, and to compare the ways of expression by different pianists from their recordings through Takemitsu's representative piano works, Litany and Rain Tree Sketch II..;The significance of the results is that to know his musical concept behind the score helps not only pianists understand performance issues, but also helps the audience be familiar with Takemitsu's piano music so that they can appreciate it more deeply.
