The main focus of this action research project was to determine what elements of institutional support, in terms of extra-curricular activities or programs, influenced students and their decision to enrol into a specific post-secondary institution. Prospective and current post-secondary students were interviewed to determine what students considered valuable in their post-secondary experience. The research indicated: (a) students often base their choice of school on institutional characteristics, program offerings, and the existence or lack of sports and recreational opportunities; (b) social activities are highly valued by students and facilitate student belonging; (c) student finances or other money matters are factors in their school selection; and (d) faculty characteristics and relationships with students are highly valued by students. This research opportunity is timely as many post-secondary institutions are currently facing a decline in student enrolment and have identified a greater need to implement student support strategies in anticipation of improving student retention.
