Abstract/Summary:
The motivation for undertaking the following study was to evaluate the health of society as represented by college students at the University of Wyoming. The purpose of the study was to address the societal problem of the American public's lack of civic engagement and how failures on the part of the mass media, particularly the Internet, have facilitated this problem. The following study sought to examine possible relationships between respondents' use of the Internet and respondents' civic engagement; in particular, how different types of Internet usage might associate with civic engagement. One hundred and fifty seven students (N = 157), enrolled in communication classes at the University of Wyoming participated in the study. A paper survey was administered to classes to measure two key variables: civic engagement and Internet usage. Demographic variables were also assessed.
