Abstract/Summary:
Fluency involves oral reading with accuracy, expression, and an appropriate rate (Moran, 2006). Readers who struggle with these components are unable to interact with the text (Pardo, 2004), affecting comprehension and decreasing motivation for reading (Hudson, et al., 2005). The National Reading Panel (NRP) identified repeated oral reading practice as a crucial component of classroom instruction to enhance fluency and comprehension (NRP, 2000). This study evaluated the affect of three instructional strategies on the fluency and motivation of first grade students: Readers Theater, Rhythm Walks, and Listening Centers. The results of the study suggested that repeated oral reading may have been one strategy that facilitated comprehension, promoted interaction with the text, increased motivation for reading, and helped students develop affirmative self-images as readers.
