The building sector accounts for half of the construction industry waste stream and design decisions are responsible for a substantial portion of this.;The research identified design criteria that minimise building waste production and developed a design assessment methodology. At schematic design, the level to which strategies implemented satisfy the waste minimisation targets defined at the programming stage is assessed. During concept development, the design's achieved performance is assessed and compared to the project targets.;A prototype was developed and presented to an experimented architect in the field of sustainable building design. This interview made it possible to conclude that the use of the proposed tool would lead toward the improvement of waste minimisation practices as it would guide designers and facilitate communication.;Keywords: tool, construction waste, sustainable building, design assessment.;This research aims to develop the concept and a prototype of a design assessment tool that will facilitate waste minimisation over a building's life cycle.
