Abstract/Summary:
This study identifies barriers to learning or challenges encountered by students in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), with a focus on assessment methods and the learner experience. As public awareness of MOOC learning increases, more educators are providing learning within these environments. Existing research has examined thfne demographics of MOOC environments as well as turnover rates. Limited studies have focused on the challenges or barriers student experience within these environments, especially in relation to assessment methods. This study also investigates how facilitators may design learning experiences responsive to issues identified during the research. Students and facilitators participating in selected MOOCs responded to surveys addressing issues of access and assessment. Analysis of the data will result in recommendations to facilitators and designers for creation of environments that consider identified barriers or challenges, with a focus on assessment strategies.
