| Accurate segmentation of different brain tissues is very important in functional magnetic resonance imaging as well as in other brain analysis protocols. This research work aims to present a comparison of the existing segmentation algorithms that are deployed in the neuroimaging community as part of two widely used software packages. The results obtained in this comparison can be used to select the appropriate segmentation algorithm for the neuroimaging application of interest. In addition to the whole brain area, a comparison is carried out for the subcortical region in terms of its gray matter composition. This research can be used in neuroimage studies as it provides a comprehensive analysis of the most common open source brain analysis tools that are available and also provides a recommendation as to which software package may perform optimally for a particular part of the brain. |
