Performance comparison of radio propagation models used in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract/Summary:
Research on Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) becomes popular in recent years because of the widespread wireless networking devices and the need of communication among them. Because of the tiresome of delpoyment of a real MANETs, researchers often utilize simulators to evaluate their research. There are several popular simulators such as OPNET, ns-2, and Glomosim for researchers to choose. All simulators provide toolkit for researchers to validate or collect data from their designs. The accuracy of simulators depends on how the simulated behaviors match as closely as possible the reality.; A lot of research has been conducted on MANETs, most of them are related to routing protocols. However, most of the time, researchers are focused on the models that are evaluated, but the interaction with other layers are not considered sufficiently. The neglect of the influence of other layers in simulation could ruin the research. Some research shows the influence of cross layer interaction of simulation of MANETs, but how radio propagation and interference have impacts on MANETs is still not clear.; In this thesis, we investigate four radio propagation models - Free Space, Two Ray, Okumura-Hata, and Irregular Terrain Models, and then integrate them into the simulator, Glomosim, and try to find out how these models and interference affect the evaluations of MANETs. We use average end-to-end delay and packet delivery ratio to compare the performance of different combination scenarios including pathloss models, fading models, sizes of environment, and radio receving types. Our simulation results show that radio propagation models have impacts on the performance of MANETs.
