The Fall of a Faux Pastry Chef is a culinary memoir. It traces the life of a single-minded pastry chef whose identity and self-concept was closely tied to her career. There are three levels of meaning to the theme of fall: the fall in status from Executive Pastry Chef to a service worker's position as a baker/pastry chef; a literal accidental fall directly following surgery for repetitive stress injuries, which led to a permanent disability and search for a new career; and then another accidental fall, this time figurative, into the academic world---the eventual falling back into academia and her roots in healthy, natural foods.
