Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation includes three separate essays. The first of these essays uses a general equilibrium framework to look at the relation between non farm wages and the effect of a tenure reform on land rentals and on social welfare. This essay shows that the impact of a reform depends on the responsiveness of the aggregate supply and demand of land to changes in rental prices and that non farm wage levels affect this responsiveness through several mechanisms. While there is no simple relationship between non farm wage levels and the impact of titling on land rental markets, the analysis here indicates that empirical tests of the impact of titling need to account for the non farm labor market environment.;The second essay estimates the household model that is at the base of the general equilibrium framework presented in the first essay. According to this household model, there is a stronger impact of titling over the individual supply of land, for households that participate in non farm activities. This difference is based on the ability of these households to reallocate labor between farm and non farm activities. The estimation method controls for sample selection bias. The results do not confirm the hypothesis of a stronger impact of titling for these households.;The third essay develops a Bayesian model of adoption that demonstrates how uncertainty with a package technology with known risk can lead to a sequential adoption pattern in which farmers adopt a single component first. It then develops a semi-parametric panel data model of adoption to measure the effects of experience with single trait varieties on the adoption of stacked varieties. The results underscore the importance of early experience with the non-stacked technology in the subsequent adoption of stacked varieties, i.e., a sequential adoption process.
