Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this quantitative, nonexperimental correlation study was to determine whether organizational culture predicts employee wellness within the culture of federal civil service employees. The researcher explored the issue using Schein's model of organizational culture as the theoretical lens. Secondary archival data from the United States Office of Personnel Management as part of the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey during 2015 was analyzed. Respondents included 421,878 full-time, part-time, and nonseasonal federal civil service employees located across the globe who responded to the survey. The Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey was comprised of 98 survey questions consisting of the following categories: performance culture, leadership, knowledge and talent management, and job satisfaction. The survey covered the following topic areas: personal work experiences, work unit, agency, supervisory, leadership, satisfaction, work/life, and demographics. The single research question developed for this study was does organizational culture predict the wellness of federal civil service employees? Thus, a single null and an alternative hypothesis were sufficient for the study. A simple linear regression model was tested using organizational culture as the independent variable and employee wellness as the dependent variable. Overall, the results indicate the model was significant; because the coefficient for organizational culture was positive, as organizational culture increases then employee wellness increases. There were three basic recommendations for application, and include assessing organizational at the local level, providing training on organizational culture, and develop human capital strategies that enhance organizational culture. There were also three recommendations for future research and involve using generational diversity as a mediating variable, narrowing the scope by agency and employee type, delivering an additional survey and performing a mixed methods study in order to qualify the results.
