Abstract/Summary:
The thesis aims to empirically analyze and elucidate trends and formations of the Sri Lankan dual labor market. This study consists of three papers.;The first paper, "The structure of the Dual Labor Market in Sri Lanka", empirically examines the compositional dimensions and the determinants of the dual labor market for a particular year, 2004. Prior to performing the empirical analysis an efficiency wage model is developed to theoretically explain the formation of the dual labor market for Sri Lanka. The results show the clear existence of a dual labor market and that the government generates majority of the organized institutional jobs in the country.;The second paper "Spatial Wage Dependence and Disparities in Sri Lanka" is based on the results of the first paper. First, this study explores the existing nature of spatial disparities in Sri Lanka. Then, a spatial econometric analysis is performed using a spatial wage model on the dual labor market to understand the extent of the spatial disparities in Sri Lanka. A spatial analysis of wages in Sri Lanka allows understanding the exact non-spatial effect on wage. The study shows that there is an observable effect arising from urbanization on "Good" jobs and "Bad" jobs.;The third paper, "A Temporal Analysis of the Sri Lankan Dual Labor Market Structure", performs an analysis of the time-series pattern of change in determinants of the dual labor market from 1994 -- 2004. The analysis results support the existence of a dual labor market structure for all the eleven years for Sri Lanka.
