Abstract/Summary:
This exploratory research project studied the perceptions of alternative tourism stakeholders in northern Saskatchewan and factors that enable and/or constrain knowledge transfer to occur. A qualitative approach was used to gather and interpret the data. Audiotaped telephone interviews were conducted, and coded then analysed to construct meaning. Stakeholders agreed on the general principles of the industry and the state of alternative tourism in northern Saskatchewan. There was cautious optimism as to the growth potential for the industry in the region. Results indicate that values and ethics were integral to the discussion but further extrapolation is beyond the scope of this study. An interdependent relationship between key factors (community involvement and relationship building, education and training, communication, committed, capable people, strategic planning and sustained funding) appear to be necessary for knowledge transfer and implementation to occur, all of which need attention in northern Saskatchewan. Recommendations include (1) a community development approach in order for communities and the industry to progress, communication being critical, (2) building community capacity through a variety of traditional and non-traditional educational and training methods, and (3) a sustainable funding strategy.
