| One challenge faced by educators is how to foster interest, engagement, and effort in students (Flowerday & Schraw 2003), particularly in algebra. This study examined whether providing students with choice in assignments while learning about quadratic equations in Algebra 1 increased student motivation and content mastery. Various qualitative and quantitative methodologies were used to triangulate data. These methods consisted of a 4-point Likert scale survey, a student questionnaire, and a post test. Data revealed that student motivation and content mastery increased when students were given a choice in assignments. Results also indicated that students would enjoy being given a choice in assignment more frequently. |
