The detection and characterization of high molecular weight organic compounds in ambient aerosols was investigated utilizing the mass spectroscopic techniques of matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. These traditionally laboratory-based techniques were extended to field measurements through the development of a particle impactor designed to collect ambient samples. The particle impactor was tested during two field campaigns: Storm Peak 2004 in Steamboat Springs, CO and Mesa 2005 in Boulder, CO. In both studies, organic molecules were both detected and characterized using the aforementioned techniques. |
