Studies toward the total synthesis of inostamycin C: Application of the asymmetric reductive aldol reaction

New developments in the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric reductive aldol reaction are reported. The synthetic utility of the asymmetric reductive aldol reaction is then demonstrated through the use of the reaction in synthetic studies directed toward the total synthesis of the polyether antibiotic inostamycin C.
