Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is a part of a project at Purdue University Calumet (PUC) to produce a three dimensional (3D) web based tutorial for ternary phase diagrams. Over the past five years, 3D visualization of ternary phase diagrams was achieved by using AutoCAD® and FactSage™. The purpose of this thesis is to complete the construction of 3D models for four slag ternary systems relevant to iron and steelmaking: CaO-FeO-SiO2, Al 2O3-CaO-MgO, CaO-MgO-SiO2, and Al2O 3-CaO-SiO2, and to implement a software product to display these 3D models together with their data (slag composition and temperature). The computerized methodology for integrating 3D liquidus surfaces with their data has been determined. The animation of slag path (continuous changing of composition) during steelmaking is visualized both on regular personal computer (PC) monitors and in a virtual reality environment.
