Substance abuse has become an epidemic in the United States. There have been significant changes in how addiction is defined, diagnosed, and treated. The research on substance abuse, psychosocial treatment, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) has been abundant. MAT has become an essential part of the ways in which substance abuse treatment has improved to treat both biological and psychological issues. MAT is increasingly available to the consumer to assist in combating the disease of addiction. The goal of this project was to increase knowledge in those who work directly with the substance-abusing population about available MAT options. The project also substantiates through research that MAT creates a more favorable outcome for substance abuse disorder clients.
