Six-year-old sisters Amy and Ally sneak out of the nursery to spy on their parents, leaving their toddler sister behind. As they giggle over the adult's antics, a sheet of snow rages down the mountain behind the cabin. Fearful of their father's wrath, they ignore their sister's pleas for help and hide as the avalanche swallows her up. Written with first-person vignettes of the surviving sister's childhood, interspersed into their progressing adult narrative, Winter's Sister follows the family's collapse as they each deal with guilt and blame. Thirty years later, Ally finds her widowed sister passed out drunk and nearly dead, calls Child Protective Services, and takes custody of Amy's children. Amy sets out to get her children back. The sister's relationship dissolves as each attempts to cope with haunting memories, propelling one of them over the edge of sanity in a fictional story of loyalty, forgiveness, and redemption.
