Abstract/Summary:
With the largest Turkish immigrant community, Germany has struggled over the past half century to manage the acculturation of this group politically, socially, and economically. This paper contends that while predisposing factors and choices relating to the German Turkish immigrant community do affect their acculturation, they do not completely explain the acculturation outcomes experienced. Rather, these factors and choices provide a challenge for the state to manage. The choices of the German state have slowed down the acculturative advancements of the Turkish community and demonstrate a lack of concentrated commitment to the cause of immigrant acculturation. To prove this, evidence will be offered to demonstrate the existence of policies with the potential to negatively affect acculturation, the slow acculturative changes between the first and second generations of the Turkish community, and the poor performance of the German state in acculturating this particular group in comparison to other European countries.
