Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to establish the content validity and reliability of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) (Form Y-1) (Spielberger, 1983) among individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and assess the perceived anxiety in IBD individuals. Using Orem's self care deficit theory of nursing, a panel of ten professionals with knowledge of IBD and gastroenterology reviewed the STAI, completed a content validity (CVI) and a demographic data questionnaire (DDQ). A sample of 15 IBD individuals completed the STAI and a DDQ and two weeks later repeated the STAI and a Changes in Current Health Status Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a percentage of agreement, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, Pearson's r correlation, paired t-test, and descriptive statistics. Results revealed the STAI was valid and reliable when assessing the perceived anxiety in IBD individuals. Future research should utilize a larger sample size, inpatient settings, and national and international populations.
