Abstract/Summary:
This thesis reviews current design processes for mechanical engineering and aesthetic design. Integrating both designs together a novel approach to design is proposed called: Holistic Aesthetic Mechanical Engineering Design. This method integrates mechanical engineering, aesthetic, and informed design, informed design developed by Burghardt and Hacker. Specific concepts of Holistic Aesthetic Mechanical Engineering Design are illustrated with the Watters theater model built for the Binghamton University's Theater Department. To help facilitate educating students with Holistic Aesthetic Mechanical Engineering Design a study on memory retention was done for active engagement. Students were engaged in three modes of presentation. All three groups varied in levels of active engagement. Results show that higher levels active engagement does facilitate better retention of material.
