Abstract/Summary:
This document includes a Japanese translation of a portion of the book Organ Technique: Modern and Early by George Ritchie and George Stauffer. The portion translated is "Part II. Early Organ Technique: A Method of Articulated Playing for Music Composed before 1750". It was chosen because a translation will be of particular importance to organists in Japan today. "Part II. Early Organ Technique" focuses on performance techniques from before 1750, particularly on the articulate style of playing that was standard at that time. The pedagogical approach of Organ Technique: Modern and Early to early technique is quite unique compared to other organ method books for several reasons. First, it treats early technique as an independent subject, while most technique books only suggest modifications of modern technique. Second, it presents early music in a systematic, step-by-step manner, with detailed instruction for each exercise. Third, it covers not only technical matters (fingering, pedaling, and articulation), but also musical issues (note groupings and meter) which are supported by primary sources.;The commentary of this document discusses the rationale for a Japanese translation. The first section describes the acceptance of Western Music in Japan, focusing particularly on Early Music. The second section discusses the development of organ building and organ study in Japan. The third section describes approaches to organ technique in Japan. Appendix 2, a list of Japanese organs, is included to exhibit changes in organ building in Japan that have been driven by enthusiasm for Early Music.
