Abstract/Summary:
Women writers have been instrumental in providing insight into the struggles as well as liberating issues of all women. Toni Morrison is no exception, as her writings have given readers a window into the lives of many memorable protagonists.; The researcher will do an in-depth study of one of Ms. Morrison's most renowned characters "Sula" from the novel of the same name. The thesis will address the problem of independence for the black woman from 1919 to 1965. Attention will be focused on how independence was achieved and used along with the problems that were associated with it once independence had been acquired.; The writer will accomplish this objective by exploring, the protagonist, Sula in addition to investigating other authors who have written about female protagonist living in a similar era to Sula; but not quite becoming the new age independent woman that Sula had become.
